Catching up!

Posted on

We’ve had a lot going on, so fair warning: this is a long post.  We kicked off the week with a much too short visit from my stepmother Ruth last weekend.  She ran up from Asheville to spend the night showering Asher with Grandmotherly love and it was just so nice having her here for the evening!  We’re looking forward to an upcoming trip to NC in November so that Asher can meet his great (truly great! :) ) aunt and uncle, his grandfather, his aunt Julie and so many more.  Here are a few pictures of Ruth and Asher together:

After Ruth left, Drew and I started the week with the purchase of a new (to us) car.  The salesman that we worked with, Ahktar, proved to be a highlight of the week as well.  We were at the dealership for a looooong time over two days, and during that time talked for a couple of hours with Ahktar about his life in Pakistan before he moved to America, his experience as a Muslim in Charlottesville, international realtions and more.  He told us about living in Europe, and wowed us when he said that he was fluent in seven languages.  We talked about the importance of education with regards to improving international compassion, and Ahktar said that his father once told him to look at the trees bearing fruit.  The trees that were heaviest with fruit (knowlegde) bowed down to offer their fruit to those on the ground rather than forcing people to climb up to the tree’s level for harvest.  Ahktar said that he has tried his whole life to remember that knowledge does not make a person superior, and that it is so important to make sure that each of us is reaching out to help one another understand, or at least respect, all points of view.  I’m afraid that I might not be doing his words justice, but hopefully you can get the gist.  Drew and I both felt like it was very serendipitous that we got to spend this time with Ahktar, and walked off the lot very happy customers indeed.

100_2660After spending a lovely day with my mom on Tuesday, Drew and I drove up to the Blue Ridge Parkway yesterday to hike to Humpback Rock and see the fall colors from the sky.  You might remember the we did this hike with Jo Ellen when she visited in July, and I can say without a doubt that it is much easier to make it to the top of the mountain when the baby is being worn on the outside!  (Especially when your kind husband is the one doing the toting!)  Although I still have a long road ahead, it really is so nice to feel my body working a little more to my liking these days, and there is nothing like the promise of sweeping views of color muddled mountains to get this girl moving.  On our way up, we saw a coyote, and walked the trail with tons of chipmunks making us laugh as they lead the way.  Later in the day, I was on a walk by Monticello with my friend Megan and a red tailed hawk came swooping out of the woods next to us and proceeded to perch in a tree above us and then fly ahead as if showing us the way.  It felt like an honor to be so close to one of my all time favorite birds.  Anyway, here are a couple more pictures from our hike to Humpback:

And finally, some pictures of Asher as he heads into his 7th week.  He’s smiling, cooing, kicking, pushing himself up, and even surprised us with his first roll over on Tuesday. We’ve had a great week, we’re anticipating a quiet Halloween night tomorrow, something new for Drew and me, but we’re keeping good company these days, so a night in with our favorite guy is a fine way to celebrate.

Paul Bailey

Paul Bailey

We got some sober news last night that a friend of ours from Warren Wilson was in a climbing accident in Australia.  Paul played soccer with Drew and is just a great guy, very funny and adventurous all the way around.  Although we haven’t seen Paul in a couple of years, the friendships that we have from our years at Warren Wilson are such that the good times, joking and love always pick up where we left off, and finding out that a member of that community has been hurt instantly pulls the WWC troops together.  Paul was climbing with friends in Australia and had a very serious fall, fracturing his skull and a number of bones in his face and possibly sustaining a brain injury.  He is currently in a drug induced coma to give his brain a chance to heal.  Our friends have set up a website where people can make donations to a fund to help the family offset the cost of Paul’s recovery, and everyone is reaching out to our individual networks through the web to ask for support.  If you would like to learn more about Paul and/or possibly make a contribution through PayPal of even a couple of dollars to his fund, you can do so here.  Either way, please take a moment to send a prayer, thoughts of love and healing, or any other thoughts that you have to offer to Paul and his family as they embark on what is sure to be an intense recovery period.  Thanks!

Soup season.

You know how dinner and a glass of wine or two often leads to a lot of good ideas that wind up going down the drain with the soap suds as you clean up at the end of the night?  Well recently some friends of our were having such a dinner, had a brilliant idea, cleaned up at the end of the night but kept the idea going, and now it’s a reality!  Fall and Winter are unquestionably soup season, but sometimes there’s not enough time to make soup, or like Drew and me, you can find yourself in a bit of a soup rut making the same two or three over and over.  Enter the Cville Soup Group!  Every Monday a different soup arrives on our doorstep, taking care of dinner and the desire to have something steaming and comforting on these cool days.  In turn, we’ll make and deliver soup when our week comes around, and the good soup times will keep on rolling.  We’ve been going for about a month now, and all of the soups have been amazing so far!  I wanted to collect all of the recipes in one place, so I tossed together a website with the recipes so far and will continue to update it as the weeks progress.  If you’re in the mood for soup and want some recipe ideas, you can check it out here, or by clicking on “soup group” on the right hand side over there.  Yea for our clever friends and comfort food!

We had a great day!  Drew was off, and we set out to paw through some of our favorite junk/antique stores outside of Charlottesville with our eye on the upcoming holidays.  Asher does fairly well in the car as long as we don’t hit too many stop lights in a row, and once he’s in the sling (out of the car, that is) he starts snoozing almost right away.  We found a few little treasures and had a good time looking and dreaming about filling a house one day with the junk that we love so well.  Mostly we just enjoyed walking in the sun after a very cold and rainy weekend and pointing out all of the bold colors that are beginning to emerge in the Virginia landscape as Fall really aserts itself.  We came home and got settled for the evening; Drew brought in all of the plants as we have a frost advisory tonight, we cracked open a pomegranate for dessert and Asher had a bath, something that he is really beginning to warm to, and now we’re enjoying some baby-free time before crawling into bed.  Here are a few pictures from tonight…Drew being goofy with Asher joining right in, and me being sappy…just more of the same from the Waltons!  :)

In Living Color

Well, the leaves aren’t the only thing that are red and falling off around here…

My Aunt Vicki requested color pictures, and she’s right, I’ve been a little black and white happy of late.  It’s a good thing that she mentioned it because Asher’s red hair is falling out pretty rapidly, so this inspired a quick photo shoot this afternoon to make sure that we have some pictures of his fiery crown in case this is the only time in his life that we see it.  We would be thrilled if it grows back red, but we will of course take any old hair that feels like popping out of his cute little head.

We enjoyed a day together after Drew’s 4 day stretch in the hospital, and celebrated the beautiful Fall weather by exploring trails near Monticello this afternoon.  Asher conks out as soon as we start walking anywhere, so parents, babe, and mutt were happy under a lovely October sun.

One Month…

Taking a nap "in" the sling on the couch

Taking a nap "in" the sling on the couch on his one month birthday

One month?  Really?  Somehow it’s true, 4 Fridays have come and gone marking the four weeks since we met Asher.  He had his four week check up today and we found out that he’s now 10 lbs, 8 oz and 22.5 inches (75th percentile in both for those that are interested) and our doctor seems really pleased overall with his growth and development.  He’s regulated himself on a good sleep schedule, so we’re getting about 3 hours stretches between feedings every night which is great.  Drew and I are learning how to be parents as Asher is learning how to be a person, and while everyone was right when they told us that nothing has been the same since having a child, overall, things really are going extremely smoothly, and we’re happy in this new life.  We had an excellent visit with Jo Ellen last week, and she loved all over Asher, soothing him to sleep and singing to him as soon as he was in her arms.  It’s been challenging to not have ALL of our family living right here, we can’t wait for him to meet everyone, but it’s cool to see a little bit of each of you hanging around as we tell him about all of the wonderful people that are waiting to get to know him.  For my part, I’ve been getting out, walking most days, taking a bizarre interest in running errands with the little guy, and catching up with friends for lunch and walks.  We’re lucky to have a number of friends that have had babies recently, so there’s a good group of women on maternity leave that I can connect with.  Strangers are particularly enamored with his red hair and we hear a lot of, “he’s so tiny!” everywhere we go.  Do I sound like a proud new mama?  Well, I am.

Other than that, the leaves are beginning to change, the lawn mower is packed away for the winter, the air is practically dripping with the promise of apple pie and jack o’lanterns, and the crisp mornings are the perfect motivation to get outside and play.  As Ruth has said in the past, happy Fall, ya’ll!  That’s the update.  I am trying to make it to the computer more often, so I will hopefully get more regular updates flowing here soon!
