Drew on his graduation day clicking his heels as he exited Thomas Jefferson's rotunda at UVA

Drew called this morning to let me know that he was pulled aside at work when he got in today and told that he has been nominated for UVA’s New Nurse of the Year award!!  UVA is a huge health system with hundreds of nurses, so this is really special.  I am absurdly proud of Drew, the nomination is a wonderful honor and very well deserved.  We’ll find out on October 13th who will be named, but in our house, he’s been the best nurse around for a while now.

A few moments of silence…

Posted on

It’s a flat, foggy, rainy day here in Charlottesville, so we’re bundled in the nest and thinking about a nicer day to start exploring the outdoors. Drew was on call today, his first day back at work after 2 weeks of paternity leave, and the phone startled us at 5 in the morning calling him in. It’s been 12 hours since the phone rang, and in that time, I’ve been to the doctor, enjoyed tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches with my mom and snuggled the afternoon away with Asher. He’s napping in his bassinet right now, so I thought I would take advantage of a few stolen moments with both hands free and connect with you.
IMG_8703_3We have been incredibly overwhelmed in the last two weeks…not so much by the day-to-day work involved with having a newborn, we’ve had so much help and support for that, but more by the emotional reality of becoming parents and beginning to identify with ALL of the emotions that come with that territory. Overwhelmed isn’t even the right word, because there’s a negative association there, and in this instance we’re really just rife with so many feelings that change from one second to the next and are all hinged on this perfect little boy that we have the privilege of getting to know day by day. I have never been so happy to be on such an intense roller coaster, nor could I have predicted what this ride was going to have in store for us. The small amusing details involve a lot of barf and diapers and unspeakable hours of the night, and the bigger details are more akin to a force of nature sweeping through out hearts and lives. In a word? Perfection.
So the little guy just woke up and I am now typing one handed and must sign off…I send my love and Asher says, “feed me.”

Well, we’re into week number 2 and everything is rolling right along.  Asher is continuing to gain weight, eat well, and above all surprise and amaze us.  We’re starting to get into a little bit more of a daily groove and I think that all three of us are getting more comfortable with all the newness of everything.  Our awesome pediatrician has given Asher a perfect bill of health, something that we continue to be extremely grateful for.  Up until last night he’s been sleeping for 3 hours at a time, but then threw us a curve ball last night, so we’ll see what this evening holds for us.  Our friends have been very kind with bringing really delicious meals by, so we’re just holding down the fort in our little nest.  Here’s a video of the little guy, and happy equinox!

Today is Drew’s 29th birthday!  We are celebrating this morning with Asher…in the sense that he’s snoozing, we had waffles with honey and now we’re just getting moving and loving that this is the first of the rest of our birthdays that will be celebrated with our little fella…that kind of celebration.

Asher is continuing to sleep quite well in his bassinet at night, about 2-3 hours at a time and for that we are very thankful.  Here’s a peek at how our morning started:

There is not an adequate way to express how incredible Drew is in his new roll as a father.  He is attentive and calm and graceful and beautiful to watch as he fawns over this sweet child.  He is, as always, incredibly thoughtful with both Asher and me and has been a true pillar of strength as we’ve navigated this first week as a family.  It is fitting that on this day last week we were celebrating the arrival of our son, and now a week later we are celebrating his father.  Birth brings about a lot of attention for mother and baby, but my experience is teaching me that it is the father that is the backbone of this entire operation.  Saying that I would be lost without Drew right now does not even begin to shed light on how much we’ve been relying on him, and of course Drew has risen to the challenge above and beyond with his usual humor, joy, and selflessness.  He is truly a sight to behold.  So happy birthday to a wonderful man and a remarkable father!

And if for some reason Drew and I drop the ball, Grace has decided to make sure that we know what to do…she’s taking her new charge extremely seriously:

I am a little too tired/out of it/excited etc to write much here, but in a nutshell, we’re home!  We’re doing well, going on about 12 hours of sleep since Thursday, so I guess my career operating heavy machinery is on hold for the time being.  Here are some pictures of our perfect boy.  Love is a potent thing.

Our Sun.

Just a brief update, we welcomed our son, Asher Andrew Walton, into the world today at 12:50 pm.  He’s 8 lbs 10 oz and 21.5 inches long, and we are, predictably, smitten.  Pictures to follow but first, sleep!  Our love and gratitude to all.

his room.

Well team, taking pictures of a room is kind of a tricky thing.  I mean simple enough, but tricky to capture the sense of the space.  I’m giving that disclaimer as part of the reason that it’s taken me so long to get any pictures up of the baby’s room, and also because it’s been a day-by-day process as people have kindly contributed to making this a home for a baby.  And so it’s without further ado that I share a few pictures of our little guys room…

This is the view walking in:

Drew picked out the planetary mobile hanging over the crib, it’s a relatively accurate model of the solar system, something that is very important to infants, I’m sure.  ;-) IMG_8641
His changing table…we’re waiting on the pad and in the meantime his sheepskin, or “lamby” is holding down the fort:
(Also note the excellent print, that you can’t really see, hanging on the wall from Lisa)

And here’s the nursing/reading nook.  This is where I’ve been doing my sitting of late, thinking about the little fella.  The cabinet to the left was something from my mother’s childhood, a pie safe that is now doubling as a wardrobe:IMG_8633

And finally, the baby’s view of the mobile.  It will be a few months before he’s in his crib, but I think this will be pretty neat to look at once he’s there:IMG_8637

I realize in getting this together that I should’ve taken some pictures of the little things in the room that have brought me a lot of joy…the homemade gifts, like an excellent elephant friend from Claui, the sweet bird rack from his Aunt Julie, the vintage alphabet prints that are hanging over the changing table, and so many more of the wonderful things that people have shared with us, but I didn’t do that just yet, and now this is uploaded and ready to publish, so with any luck I’ll follow up with some of that in the very near future!

It’s in the can.

Labor on labor day?  Sounded good to me, but so far, no dice.  Drew’s working in the hospital today and I’m taking care of some work things and house things and thought I would share some pictures from the weekend.

On Saturday, we converted about 15 lbs of tomatoes from the garden into salsa and canned it.  This was our first canning venture, and we both enjoyed it.  We don’t have a pressure canner so we just used the water bath method, and given the small quantiy that we were working with, it went pretty quickly.  Now we’re thinking about making tomato sauce, and pickles and…oh right, we’re waiting on a baby to arrive.  Well, I’ll let you know if we stock the shelves with any other summer goods, and how the salsa turned out!

IMG_8567The prep work…skins removed from the tomatoes, diced onions and diced bannana peppers and jalpenos from the garden.

IMG_8572The skins waiting to head to the trash.

IMG_8573Cooking the salsa down…

IMG_8577And filling the jars before sticking back them back in the boiling water to seal them.

IMG_8619Voila!  The finished product.  Now the question remains, when do we dig in?
