I’m all baby. And I apologize for all the parenthesis.

Why We Photograph Our BabiesThere’s a compliment that all mothers-to-be like to hear, and that I am fairly certain Drew has been trailing in front of me paying our unsuspecting friends to occasionally pass it along to me, no matter the cost of this kind lie.  The old “You are just all baby!” meaning that the unending pregnancy weight gain is magically concentrated on what Hollywood so adoringly calls the bump.  Ahem, mountain might be a more appropriate term…I got a bump on my head this morning when I forgot to bend in half to get in the car…that is not what’s happening on the front of this body that was once mine.  But enough of that, what I’m getting at here is that, with just three (please don’t be five, please don’t be five, please don’t be five) weeks left to this pregnancy, it’s official, I’m conceding.  I’m all baby.  Not so much in the way that the compliment was intended (if that we’re the case, people would be saying, “you’re just all ice cream!”) but more in the sense that my brain is all baby.  My days are all baby.

To be fair, I made it pretty far, keeping as many of my baby ramblings as possible relegated to this blog, but at this point, I give.  I can’t think about much else besides being a mother to this little boy.  I am trying to fill my final days with movies (caught The Time Traveler’s Wife last night…please promise that you’ll read the book before seeing the movie, the book is bliss), live music, books, (I refuse to admit to you what series I’m reading right now, but let’s just say that I have to buy it in the teen fiction section and leave it at that), time with Drew, some pesky housecleaning, and my absolute favorite pastime, sleep.  I really am, but in between that, I’m shamelessly reading blogs about mothering, touching the things in his room, or just sitting in the rocking chair in his room, eating I’m sure, and staring out the window trying to wrap my mind around what we’re about to do here.  I am positive that my voice and eyes take on a new level of excitement (did someone just say hysteria out there in the back??) when my friends ask about something baby related, and relieve me of having to pretend that I’m thinking about those books or movies or current events.  I aspire to, and hopefully will be a woman who maintains a sense of life outside of mothering and all, but for right now, for this precious time of our life and the for coming weeks and months, just bear with me.  I’m all baby.  I’m supposed to be, the system is designed this way.  I will jump back into the mainstream at some point, and from what I gather from my friends with babies, will be desperate to talk about books (you know, or read one) and politics and anything else that doesn’t involve the words “butt” and “rash” but for right now…well, sorry,  there’s just no hope.  I’m all baby.

92Ok, so all of that is to say, check out this blog.  It’s called How to Photograph Your Baby and is written by Nick Kelsh (responsible for the pictures you see here), photographer and author of a number of books including one by the same title as the blog.  For those of you without babies/children/and interest in my current obsession, hear me out…this is an excellent blog about connecting with anything that you love and then taking a photo of it.  As an amateur photog, I appreciate the extreme sappiness of his position on the relationship that the photographer assumes with the subject.  If you love taking pictures of insects or strangers or your cats or whatever, I think that you’ll enjoy his musings.  I know that I am.  And as it turns out, I will soon be taking one or two pictures of our baby, so the pointers are appreciated on that subject too.  Take a look, and then go have a bowl of ice cream with sprinkles and possibly some chocolate syrup, and think of me.

This is a quote that I think about quite a bit:

“There can be no happiness if the things we believe in are different from the things we do”
-Freya Madeline Stark

I am afraid that I still struggle to reconcile this gap, in large part because there’s a great deal of life that can’t be quite as indulgent as my imagination believes possible, I think, but I do think about walking my talk, so to speak, quite a lot.  Tuesday seemed like a nice day to remind myself of this.

And unrelated…

How cool are these?  Drew and I have repurposed a number of jars and cans for various things over the years, but never with quite so much finesse.  I am not totally clear where you can buy these (or whether you can) and I know that there’s something similar for glass jars, but I haven’t come across them in a while.  Anyway, this makes the pickle jar that’s home to our herbamare look a little homely; there’s something about these tin can lids that I find so charming.  Read the article here.

Fun at the Festival

Another weekend coming to a close!  We had a great couple of days…a quiet Friday night and then yesterday we headed out to a local brewery, Devil’s Backbone,  in Nelson County for the first annual Brew Ridge Trail Music Festival.  Lots of local vendors showed up and we enjoyed a day of good music and great company.

We were also celebrating our friend Jedd’s (center) birthday:

Our friends Joe and Leigh Anne just welcomed their son Devin Gabriel into the world about 2 weeks ago.  Here he is enjoying his first music festival at a mere 11 days old…not a bad start!

And our buddy David, ever the ham, keeping us all entertained:

We were happy that we braved the rainy start for what proved to be a gorgeous, if not steamy, day.  Today has been spent accomplishing some much needed organization in the house and basement, with Drew taking a break for a kickball game.  Mostly everything is unpacked and ready for the baby, and so we’re wrapping up this Sunday evening with visions of sweeping mountain views, organized shelves and the sounds of local music floating through the air.

“The lullaby is the spell whereby the mother attempts to transform herself back from an ogre to a saint.” –James Fenton

An ogre?  Oh dear…

With that in mind, I recently put together a playlist of my take on modern lullabies, and thought that I would share it here.  It might not put the baby boy to sleep, but at least we’ll have something familiar to sway to while we’re awake.

I called the list, (somewhat optimistically, I’ll admit) “He Sleeps”:

  • Today: Joshua Radin
  • Hot August Evening: The Biscuit Burners
  • The Only Living Boy In New York: Simon & Garfunkel
  • Half Acre: Hem
  • Love Me: John Pringle
  • Saturday Sun: Nick Drake
  • You’re the One I Want: Chris and Thomas
  • Song Bird: Eva Cassidy
  • Blades Of Grass: Birdlips
  • Ecstasy: The Barrel House Mamas
  • Blue Sky Blues: Ryan Adams
  • Why Worry: Emmylou Harris & Mark Knopfler
  • Can’t Go Back Now: The Weepies
  • Waiting On an Angel: Ben Harper
  • Godspeed (Sweet Dreams): Dixie Chicks

celebration station…

Well, I am one spoiled little lady…this past weekend was one of celebration!  On Friday, my office hosted a very sweet shower and lunch in little Bonkers’ honor and we had a great time laughing and imagining the little guy in his new outfits as he discovers what this world is all about day by day.  -7

We then went over to Mom and Skip’s for an early birthday fiesta which was delicious!  Mom decorated with bright colors and spoiled us with homemade soup, enchiladas and black beans and rice.  Oh!  And a really good salad…Drew is waiting for a bottle of Mom’s homemade 1000 Island dressing right now ;-) .  We were given a high chair earlier in the day, so of course that was set up at the head of the table in honor of the little fella that is still catching a ride with me (Elmo’s just keeping it real down there):

And I cheated the diabetes a little for a piece of my favorite flourless chocolate cake from a delicious local bakery…we figured that if I was going to eat cake we might as well go for the gusto!

On Saturday my ladies here hosted a great shower at our friends Trip and Lindley’s house.  They made a gorgeous spread of food, complete with four kinds of tea sandwiches, white sangria, fizzy lemonade and cupcakes.  For those of you that check the blog with some regularity, you know how I feel about cupcakes…but I digress.  We were once again spoiled by everyone’s generosity and thoughtfulness and I was overwhelmed with the kindness of all of the ladies.

My friend Autum brought her 9 week old son, Xavier, so all the ladies took a turn snuggling on him and he was beyond obliging to all of the attention.  You can see him here with Lindsay and Kelly:

Jo Ellen sent what is sure to be one of Drew’s favorite outfits for the baby:

And the shower closed with lots of hugs and thank yous and again, more laughing.  That night, we carried right on with a party so that the fellas could get in on some of the fun without having to exercise their ohhhs and awwws too much.  In fact, they spent the day shooting skeet at our friend Kyle’s house.  The guys felt that it was best to get Drew out with some guns and beer before he was subjected to a land of diapers and pastels, and he said that it was a great day.  There was a little blood shed, but everyone survived (fear not, no one was shot, just a little hit to our friend Kyle’s head) and they came home with big grins.

On Sunday Drew and I took a little overnight trip to nearby Staunton, an extremely charming historical town.  We stayed in a Bed and Breakfast there called the Belle Grae Inn, and the innkeepers very sweetly upgraded us to a suite with a huge tub, so I was a happy mama.  Drew treated me to a birthday dinner at a restaurant that we’ve been wanting to go to since we moved here, the Staunton Grocery, which specializes in local seasonal fare.  It was the kind of meal that is so delicious that it really compromises any good conversation because we were both so enjoying each bite.

On Monday we spent the morning poking around Staunton and then headed back to Charlottesville for some errands and an appointment with our midwife, Donna.  She confirmed that the baby is facing in the right direction, we heard that fantastic heartbeat and she said that everything appears to be right on track!  We have started our weekly appointments now, so we’ll see Donna every Monday until the big day. With only 4 (well, ok, possibly 6 if he decides to take his time) weeks left, we’re pretty much just waiting at this point, and I’m crossing my fingers that I won’t possibly be able to get much bigger…but all he’s doing in there at this point is putting on weight, so I think that’s a feeble hope at best.

And finally…our tomatoes are in!  Here are some pictures of the bounty that we came home to last night: (Lemon Boy and a decidedly un-whopperish Whopper)100_2431

Tomatoes are so perfect.  Summer at its best.

So, that’s the re-cap.  I feel so lucky to have a supportive and wonderful community here…the glow of this weekend will be sticking with me at 3am feedings for sure, thank you to everyone for your kindness and enthusiasm!

Hmm?  Oh sorry, didn’t mean to ignore you, I’ve just been sitting here laughing at myself.  Why, you ask?  <<<chuckle>> because…

I thought that I looked pregnant in this picture way back in April.  Hahahahahaha.

Oh me.  Anyhow, I realized this morning that I’m wearing the same outfit that I was wearing in that picture, except…well, something seems different.  What do you think?

Five weeks and counting.  Happy weekend!

It’s Monday, and while this isn’t particularly relevant to anything, I just ate the most delicious Fuji apple that was so full of flavor and juice that it actually sent some juice flying across the room when I bit into it.  What a tasty way to kick off my morning!

Ok, down to the serious business here (haha).  We had a long weekend it seemed, though it was the usual Saturday and Sunday.  Drew is building a fence with a friend that just bought a house, so they hammered and sawed away at that all day Saturday in the sweltering heat and made impressive progress.  We went to dinner at one of our favorite restaurants Saturday night and just took our time enjoying the outdoor seating and food.  It’s a Tapas restaurant, so we enjoyed the multiple course feel of getting little bites progressively and agreed that our favorite of the evening was a crab stuffed chilli pepper in a smoked ancho sauce.  Yum.  We talked about things other than this baby of ours for most of the meal (shocking, I know) but did come back to his imminent arrival at the end of the night as we talked about traditions that we want to either carry on, ditch, or implement with our budding family.  Of course the little man isn’t going to know the holidays from his elbow this coming year (yeah, or really next year for that matter), but we figure we can start amusing ourselves with laying some of the foundation for birthdays and Christmas and weekly activities in this coming year.  We then both went a little tradition planning crazy before realizing that we needed to reign it in and hunt down some diabetes friendly dessert.

Amelia04Me around the same age as D in the picture above.

Following that conversation, for some reason I started thinking about what the baby might look like…which is a very abstract concept at this point, and something that Drew and I both admit to giving very little thought to.  We’ve wondered a little, but I’ve at least never actually tried to picture any of his features…how could I?  Mom and Skip shared some scanned pictures from my childhood this past week, and I’m going to pull some pictures of Drew that Jo Ellen sent to us because, while it’s true that this guy is largely going to look like himself, there is something charming about imagining seeing bits of each of our families in his face.  It’s funny to think that I have no idea what this person that we are about to know so well will look like, while in the very near future I won’t ever be able to imagine not knowing his face.  Soon enough, soon enough.

Bark.

Posted on

Drew and I like the woods.  Especially in the Fall (Spring is for fields, Summer for rivers, Winter for the covers) but hiking in the Summer is always welcome, and it’s something that we’ve done less of as I’ve turned into a movable mountain this year.  If we take a camera when we hike, Drew inevitably takes pictures of tree bark, a quirk that delights me even though I poke a little bit of fun at him for all of the pictures of bark that we’ve acquired through the years.  The best are the pictures of the bark in Costa Rica which made our Locust trees look welcoming, but good old pines will intrigue him too.  In a way, Drew’s painting style is quite a bit like tree bark…seemingly random patterns until you look closer and see the beautifully intricate design of a meticulous mind.  I am not sure what we’ll do with the bark pictures, I have a vison of constructing a large photo tree with them one day or maybe bark wrapping paper sounds neat to me…I bet there’s a way to have your own wrapping paper printed, and I can certainly think of some simple ways to make my own.  For the time being, I thought that I would share a few from our recent hike to Humpback Rock as a view of the world as Drew sees it.  I’ve left them full size so that you can really get a feel for them…100_2408
