Things to be happy about

Posted on

Well, in looking through my camera, I realized that there’s been a lot going on that I haven’t shared pictures of, and so this fine Memorial Day is giving me a chance to catch up and I’m going to do a little show and tell this afternoon of some of the things that we’ve had going on…

In addition to the big ultrasound last Thursday, it was our wedding anniversary and so we celebrated with a hike and a delicious (seriously delicious) dinner at our favorite Charlottesville restaurant, C&O.  The night concluded with a walk around downtown and some homemade gelato, and we were happy campers.  Here we are before heading out for the evening:

Next up…How does your garden grow?  Well, our modest gardening endeavors are in full effect, and ushering in as much novel joy as ever!  That big fat rabbit from last year seems to have moved on and Mabel has become and indoor/outdoor cat again and is keeping a keen eye on anything that moves in the great outdoors.  She’s older and quite a bit fatter than she was the last time that she was allowed outside, so she spends the majority of her time sleeping on the front stoop, but she did bring us a small ‘offering’ in the way of a mole not too long ago, so I’m sure that she would want me to tell you all that she’s still got it.  If cat hunting isn’t your thing, forget everything I just said and take a look at the surprise that I woke up to yesterday morning:

These lilies never bloomed last year, so I couldn’t remember if they we’re star gazers or Asiatic, but as it turns out, they are the latter and just lovely.  We also have returning snap dragons, which was a big surprise, as these little bejeweled annuals should have kicked the bucket with the winter, but you can see them to the right in this photo:

We’ve broadened our garden horizons very nominally this year with a second bed because we realized that we wanted the majority of our limited space to be dedicated to tomatoes, so our larger bed from last year is the tomato garden, or at the moment, space ship garden with all of the cages, and the smaller bed has our lettuce, cauliflower, peppers, dill, onions and basil kind of packed in.  Ms Stewart would not approve, but it was the best that we could do.

What else?  Ahh yes, the perfunctory Dad-putting-the-crib-together pictures.  I woke up from a nap to this scene the other day (I know, tough life.) and Drew said that he didn’t swear or bang anything once, so we have a beautiful crib courtesy of my grandfather waiting for bedding and a baby!

And finally, Mabel used to spend a great deal of time laying on the guest bed and looking out the window.  We pulled a fast one and switched rooms as the baby’s room is now the previous guest room, but Mabel was not to be deterred from her favorite window.  She has simply modified her resting position.  Have a look:

So I think that’s it for now, it’s a quiet day around here, but I’m thinking of my brother Fred and all of the other Veterans in this country and sending love to you all.

Baby Walton 020

What a day for us yesterday was!  We had our ultrasound and found out that we are definitely having a boy!  Though this does not often happen to me, I have to say that I am at a little bit of a loss trying to communicate what emotions are associated with ‘seeing’ our baby for the first time yesterday…the best two words that I can come up with are surreal joy.  I have been taken with the alien notion that there is a little human incubating inside of me sharing DNA contributions from both Drew and me, but the experience of seeing our boy yesterday flipped it from a cerebral experience to a heart experience.  And here is where the onslaught of cliches comes tumbling in because I will tell you what, I think that both Drew and I fell in love with such a ferocity and the only thing that I’m left to fear now is how much more intense and real this love is going to feel when we are holding this child and feeling his breath against our skin.

I’m coming to find out that talking about parenthood, even at this stage, is a simultaneously unique and universal experience.  While it’s true that Drew and I are going to be this child’s only parents which will be an inherently unique experience to our family, it’s also true that all of the things that I have heard so many other parents (including my own!) say are becoming real in a charming, predictable,  and sometimes amusing way.  We’ve all heard people list off all of the things that they will not be doing as parents, and then enjoyed the sweet reality that kicks in when in fact parents do exactly what they said they wouldn’t do.  Grandparents seem to get a kick out this in particular.  So, of course Drew and I have our respective laundry lists of things that we won’t do starting with the biggies like abandonment and concluding with the smaller more negotiable things like sugary cereals (not allowed) and how to handle a grocery store tantrum (giving the crying child nonchalantly to the woman with the cart closest to mine and then quietly finding the nearest exit.) etc.  Well one of those things for me is how people handle the ultrasound and already I am nibbling on my first piece of humble pie.  I did not think that I would be a woman who would carry her ultrasound photos around with her in her purse to show to any unsuspecting passerby, and yet, we’ve only had these puppies in our possession for the last 24 hours, and I caught myself just in the nick of time before mentioning them to our waiter last night to see if he might take the bait and want to take a peek.  I am becoming the crazy ultrasound picture mom.  And I know that this is just the beginning.  So dear devoted blog readers (all four of you!) this is my preemptive apology for what I’m about to do, but would you like to see our son?  He’s as perfect as he can be, and if you would like to come over for coffee sometime, I’ll surely pop in the DVD of the ultrasound and tell you how the valves of his heart work, because that is how crazy ultrasound picture moms roll.

“If I keep a green bough in my heart, then the singing bird will come”
-Chinese Proverb

Ok, so we’ve more or less been in a drought for years, and much like the national deficit, it would seem that there is not enough rain in the sky to get us caught up.  Given that, let me commend the noble effort that the weather is making to get ahead…perhaps this is the weather version of a stimulus package.  It has been raining for days, and it appears that it is going to continue to drizzle through the weekend.  While I have been whining about this a little and ironically humming Here Comes the Sun to myself, I have to say that it is hard not to acknowledge what a grand job all this rain is doing to kick the world into a lush, velvety carpet of green and for that I am very grateful.  The mountains are free of any barren blemishes (save local mining projects, but I digress), the grass is growing at a rate that makes even the kudzu feel inferior, and generally we are being blanketed in the kind of green that all of us East Coasters live for all winter long.  Though a little less showy than waking up to the mystical first snow in winter, there is something equally breathtaking about that one morning in Spring when it becomes clear that green is in and brown is suddenly so last Fall.

I just wish that we could go for a dry walk to ‘soak’ it all in…

So here’s to you, Rain, and your rejuvenating bag of tricks.  May you prosper, but please give some thought to sharing some of the Spring glory with that feisty old ball of fire up there too.

See ya in the Fall, ya’ll!

Well, no, not really, but that is what I said to a great deal of my wardrobe as I packed it away last night.  But I’ll get to that…

It was a lovely weekend!  On Friday we held our first International Croquet Party with some family friends, and it was a trip to say the least!  Everyone wore their finest whites and we took to the field with a general idea of how the game is played and a lot of spirit.  It would appear that great croquet playing does not run in the family as Mom and I were, ahem, not the strongest players on the pitch, but we sure did have a good time trying!  Drew was working, so he joined in time for a late glass of wine and some recounting of the battle stories, and I think that there are already plans in the works for the next match.

On Saturday we went to a very nice, though slightly bittersweet going away picnic for friends that are moving to Oregon at the end of the month.  It was our hope to get home in time to plant the rest of the vegetable garden, but the rain had a different plan for us, so the day ended early with a movie on the couch and the sound of more Spring showers hitting the ground, which was really the perfect end to the day!

Sunday was mostly a chore day, and this is where the fond farewell to most of my clothes comes in.  I finally bit the bullet and sorted through everything so that those that are not as accomodating of this growing belly can make way for the roomy options.  I had always looked forward to the idea of maternity clothes, and while I appreciate how good pregnant women have it these days, I have to say that making puppy dog eyes at maternity clothes is the business of women who aren’t in fact pregnant.  Now that everything’s organized, and I don’t have to be distracted by those boring old who-wants-to-wear-pants-with-zippers-anyway options, I am all set for the 2nd half of this pregnancy!  We’re officially counting down the days to the first ultrasound and in the meantime we’ll be waiting for the rain to break to get our vegetables going (and then waiting for more rain to get those vegetables growing) and generally starting to look towards Summer!
